State Government Consultation: Draft State-Wide Flood Hazard Code Amendment

The South Australian Government is preparing a State-Wide Flood Hazard Code Amendment as part of a broader initiative to update flood hazard mapping and planning rules across South Australia.

This project is being led by the State Planning Commission and the Department for Housing and Urban Development (DHUD). It may affect properties, development applications and future planning requirements in parts of the Town of Gawler and surrounding areas.

The proposed Code Amendment seeks introduces updated flood hazard mapping and planning overlays, informed by contemporary flood modelling, LiDAR data and updated climate and growth projections. These changes aim to improve consistency in how flood risk is identified and managed across the state, and to better protect people, property, infrastructure and the environment from future flooding impacts.

The updated flood studies consider factors including future urban growth and climate impacts through to 2050. The proposed planning overlays are intended to guide future development, building design and land use planning in areas potentially affected by riverine flooding and stormwater inundation.

What’s being proposed?

The draft State-Wide Flood Hazard Code Amendment includes proposed changes in three key areas:

  • More consistent and updated flood hazard mapping
  • Improved planning rules
  • Faster processes for future mapping updates
